Filip Hlavac enters the IceCats’ 2026–27 season as one of the roster’s most promising young defensemen. Born in Ostrava, Czechia in 2003, Hlavac is just 23 years old, yet he already brings pro experience to Florence after spending time with the Blue Ridge Bobcats of the FPHL. In addition to his time with Blue Ridge, Hlavac played four games each for the SPHL’s Quad City Storm and Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs in the 2024-25 season. Standing 6’3″ and 207 pounds, he offers an appealing blend of size, youth, and SPHL familiarity — a combination that gives him significant long‑term upside.

Hlavac signed with Pee Dee in late September 2026, joining a late wave of additions that also included Evan Beers, Eimantas Noreika, and Danil Fyodorov. His arrival from a Single-A hockey club gives him a meaningful advantage over players transitioning from college or overseas leagues. He already understands the pace, physicality, and nightly demands of minor league competition, which should help him settle in quickly as the IceCats build chemistry ahead of opening night.

Given his age relative to most of his new teammates, Hlavac profiles as a player the coaching staff may look to develop over multiple seasons while competing for top‑pairing minutes. His size and right‑shot profile make him a valuable asset on the back end, especially as Pee Dee works to establish a defensive identity in a tougher league. Young defensemen with his physical tools often grow into significant roles as they gain experience and confidence.

Hlavac’s signing also contributes to the unusually international makeup of the IceCats’ defense corps. Alongside Rasmus Asp of Sweden and Noé Perez of France, Hlavac helps form one of the more globally diverse blue lines in the SPHL. That diversity reflects the organization’s willingness to explore talent pipelines far beyond the traditional North American junior and college systems.

As the IceCats prepare for their first SPHL season, Hlavac stands out as a long‑term investment — a young, physically gifted defenseman with league experience and room to grow. Fans should expect him to compete for regular minutes during camp and develop into a key contributor as the season progresses.
