If you’re looking to build a minor league hockey program in a beautiful location, you can’t do much better than Wytheville, VA. Hitachi Energy Arena, home of the Blue Ridge Bobcats, is nestled in the heart of the mountains of western Virginia. Driving up from Florence, SC took about four hours, absolutely doable for an afternoon.
The arena is easily accessible from I-77/I-81, but do be aware that there is a two lane road to enter the facility. Traffic in and out can get a bit congested at times. Once you crest the hill leading to the entrance, there are lots of places to park in the fields around the arena, as well as in a paved lot on the far side of the facility.

Arena
Hitachi Energy Arena is unassuming from the outside, but you’re in for a treat when you come in the doors. Originally built as a livestock arena, the facility has been dramatically transformed into an ice rink with plenty of stadium seating.

Lighting is excellent, there’s a concourse that wraps from one side to the other like a horseshoe, and there are plenty of concessions to enjoy.

Also, check out this super cool wall displaying past specialty jerseys! The Saint Patrick’s Day edition (in green, obviously) was my favorite.

Concessions
As far as concessions go, check out the snacks and meals at the arena. Fairly standard prices for a sporting event, but there’s a decent variety of options. The staff are friendly and the kitchen (along with the rest of the facility) is very clean.

And yes, in case you were wondering, there is a Dippin’ Dots vendor set up there. This particular kiosk was also selling dirty sodas, while another vendor offered freshly squeezed lemonade and hot coffee. Lines tend to get long quickly during intermissions, so your best bet is to get something right before the game or shortly after a new period begins.

Merchandise
I’ve got to admit that Blue Ridge’s colors look good — especially when you pair the blue and gold with a gray shirt. While they had already sold out of pucks, it was fun looking through the other items they had available.

Fans
While the facility is great, the Blue Ridge fanbase is what makes this place shine. All the Bobcat fans were courteous, even though we were decked out in full IceCats apparel (and were oftentimes a bit loud as we cheered the boys on). I had great conversations with folks who have interacted with us online, finally getting a chance to put a face with the name.

While we didn’t walk away with a win on the scoreboard, we had a blast getting a chance to cheer Pee Dee on in Blue Ridge. You can tell this fanbase takes pride in their team and facility!
