A goal is scored when the puck completely crosses the goal line inside the net, but not every puck that goes in counts. Certain actions can cause a goal to be waved off, even if it appears to cross the line cleanly.

Players are not allowed to kick the puck into the net using a distinct kicking motion. Deflections off skates are legal, but intentional kicks are not. High‑sticking is another key rule: if a player contacts the puck with their stick above the height of the crossbar and it goes directly into the net, the goal does not count.

Goalie interference is one of the most closely watched scoring rules. Players may screen the goalie, but they cannot make contact that prevents the goalie from moving freely or making a save. If interference occurs, the goal is disallowed. These rules ensure that goals are scored through skill and positioning rather than illegal advantage.
